In het kader van de IDW (Internationale design workshopweek 2021) componeerden we een geluidswandeling. Aan de hand van verschillende soundspots, visuele en fysieke interventies word je door de site van Luchtbal geleid. De wandeling start aan het sculptuur met QR-code in het jongerencentrum JES en duurt ongeveer een uur. Elke soundspot op de wandeling is verbonden met een soundscape en beelden die je kan vinden via onze QR code. Soms was het geluid storend, soms ook verrassend en fris. Zowel de soundscape als de beelden geven een gelaagde reflectie van deze ambiguïteit weer.
We nodigen jullie van harte uit om deze fijne buurt in al zijn facetten te leren kennen. Neem actief deel aan de compositie en ‘make some noise’!

As part of the IDW (International design workshop week 2021), we composed this sonic walk. It will guide you through the Luchtbal site by means of various sound spots, visual and physical interventions. The walk starts at the sculpture with a QR code in the youthcenter JES and will take about an hour. Each sound spot is connected to a soundscape and images that you can find by scanning the QR code.
Sometimes the sound was disturbing, sometimes surprising and fresh. Both the soundscape and the images provide a layered reflection of this ambiguity.
We kindly invite you to get to know this nice neighborhood in all its facets. Join our composition actively and make some noise!

SOUNDSPOT 1
COLOMBIASTRAAT
Deze soundspot is gelegen tussen Bloc 2030 en de containers. Deze containers werden door JES opgesteld om een plaats te zijn waar jongeren hun vrije tijd kunnen besteden. De locatie is gelegen tussen de colombiastraat en de spoorweg die erlangs verder loopt. Aan het gebouw is vooral enkel het treinverkeer te horen terwijl er aan de containers meer te horen is door jongeren die van deze volumes gebruik maken. Tussen deze twee locaties in is er een park gelegen waar kleinere kinderen spelen en hun vrije tijd doorbrengen. Het treinverkeer dat te horen is op deze twee locaties wordt afwisselend aangevuld door het geluid van spelende kinderen en hangjongeren.
This soundspot is located between Bloc 2030 and the containers. These containers were set up by JES to be a place where young people can spend their free time. The location is located between the colombiastraat and the railway that continues alongside it. In particular, only the train traffic can be heard from the building, while there’s more noise at the containers from youngsters using these volumes. In between these two locations there is a park where smaller children can play and spend their free time. The train traffic that can be heard at these two locations is alternately supplemented by the sound of children playing and young people hanging around.
SOUNDSPOT 2
BURGEMEESTER JOZEF MASUREBRUG
& ARGENTINIËLAAN
Op deze locatie zelf is weinig passage van de bewoners van luchtbal maar is het treinverkeer duidelijk te horen. Elk uur passeren er een aantal treinen die vanop afstand al te horen zijn. Stilte herken je hier niet als complete stilte maar als een constante ruis van het industrieel geluid van treinen. Naast het omgevingsgeluid is er onder de brug, iets verder gelegen een geïsoleerd geluid te horen van een waterlek aan het bovenoppervlak van de brug.
At this location there is little passage of the Luchtbal residents, but train traffic can be clearly heard. Every hour a number of trains pass by that can be heard from a distance. You don’t recognize silence here as complete silence, but as a constant noise of the industrial noise of trains. In addition to the noise under the bridge, a little further away, an isolated sound can be heard from a water leak at the top surface of the bridge.
SOUNDSPOT 3
DOCTOR DECROLYLAAN
Enkele straten verder, in de Doctor Decrolylaan is de buurt levendiger. Door de dichtbijgelegen lagere scholen is hier meer passage in vergelijking met de nabijgelegen straten in de buurt. Het plein aan het einde van de straat wordt bezocht door jonge kinderen en ouders. De aanwezigheid van groen wordt hier aangevoeld door het bewegen van struiken en bomen door de wind. Vogeltjes in de bomen zijn naast de bladeren harmonisch te horen en dragen bij tot het levendig, rustgevend gevoel op deze soundspot. Deze soundspot staat sterk in contrast met de vorige locaties.
A few streets further, in the Doctor Decrolylaan, the neighborhood is livelier. Due to the nearby primary schools, there is more passage here compared to the nearby streets. The square at the end of the street is visited by young children and parents. The presence of greenery is sensed here by the movement of bushes and trees in the wind. Birds in the trees can be heard harmoniously aside from the leaves and contribute to the lively, soothing feeling of this soundspot. This soundspot contrasts strongly with the past locations.
SOUNDSPOT 4
CANADASTRAAT & COLUMBIALAAN
Binnenpleinen in blokken tussen de Canadastraat en de Columbialaan. Dit binnenplein kan bereikt worden via verschillende doorgangen in de appartementsblokken tussen de Canadastraat en de Columbialaan. In de omgeving van het binnenplein is er een constant achtergrondgeluid aanwezig. Dit van de vele auto’s en treinen die rondom rond de Luchtbal passeren. De aanwezigheid van dit geluid wordt geaccentueerd wanneer we de doorgang nemen richting het binnenplein. Hier valt het omgevingsgeluid bijna volledig weg, het wordt gedempt en we komen terecht op een soort oase van rust en stilte. Op het binnenplein staan er vele bomen die een centrale speeltuin omringen. De omliggende appartementen kijken uit op deze binnenplaats. Wanneer de temperatuur weer wat stijgt, en de bomen weer groene blaadjes krijgen is dit een plek waar vogels zich kunnen verzamelen en waar kinderen naar believen kunnen spelen.
Courtyard within the buildings in between the Canadastraat and the Columbialaan
This courtyard can be reached through different passageways through the buildings that lay between the Canadastraat and the Columbialaan. There is a constant background noise present in the area of this courtyard. This noise comes from the multitude of cars and trains passing the Luchtbal site. The presence of this noise is accentuated when walking through the passageway to the courtyard. The constant background noise almost vanishes completely, the sound gets muted and we reach a place of peace and quiet.
At the courtyard there are different trees that surround the central playground. De surrounding apartments overlook this courtyard. When the temperature rises again and the trees get green leaves again, this is a space where birds can gather and kids can play.
SOUNDSPOT 5
ATLETIEKVELD/ATHLETICS FIELD
De volgende locatie waar deze wandeling ons brengt is het atletiekveld. Dit veld bevindt zich op een gelijke afstand tussen de treinsporen en de Noorderlaan en wordt omringd door diverse gebouwen zoals een sporthal, een schouwburg en een school. Gedurende de dag is er een constant achtergrondgeluid te horen van de passerende auto’s en treinen. Deze geluiden zijn niet individueel van elkaar te onderscheiden. Net voor, na en tijdens de schooluren komen hier natuurlijk ook nog andere geluiden bij: deze van spelende kinderen en pratende ouders.
The next location of our walk brings us to the athletics field. This field is located right in between the train tracks and the Noorderlaan and is being surrounded by different buildings like a sports hall, a theatre and a school. During the day we can hear a constant background noise that is created by the cars and trains passing by. We can’t distinguish these different sounds from each other. Before, after and during school hours sounds like those from playing children and talking parents can be heard in the area.
SOUNDSPOT 6
LANGBLOKKEN & STATION LUCHTBAL
Dit is het meest zuidelijke en luidste punt van de toer. Hier ben je omringt door verkeer en in tegenstelling tot het vorige punt hoor je een verscheidenheid aan geluiden. Langs de ene kant heb je de treinsporen en de autostrade langs de andere kant heb je het drukke kruispunt van de Noorderlaan en de Groenendaallaan waar veel doorgaand verkeer langsrijdt. Ook het openbaar vervoer (trams en bussen) rijden hier frequent langs. Vervolgens zorgt het tankstation op de hoek dan weer voor het soms storende/ hinderende geluid van autoradio’s die te luid staan. Een laatste factor is de architectuur van de gelijkvloers van de langblokken. Doordat deze zo open zijn zorgt het voor een windtunneleffect als je eronder staat en ook het geluid van deze wind is vaak heel hinderend. De combinatie van al deze factoren zorgt voor een onaangename ervaring.
This is the southernmost and loudest point of the tour. Here you are surrounded by traffic and unlike the previous point you hear a variety of sounds. On one side you have the train tracks and the highway on the other side you have the busy intersection of the Noorderlaan and the Groenendaallaan where a lot of through traffic passes. Public transport (trams and buses) also pass frequently. Then the petrol station on the corner provides the sometimes disturbing sound of car radios that are too loud. A final factor is the architecture of the ground floors of the long blocks. Because these are so open it creates a wind tunnel effect when you stand under them and also the sound of this wind is often very annoying. The combination of all these factors makes for an unpleasant experience.
